Open Culture

''Open Culture'' is a concept according to which knowledge should be spread freely and its growth should come from developing, altering or enriching already existing works on the basis of sharing and collaboration, without being restricted by rules linked to the legal protection of intellectual property. In a context of globalisation, the consequence is that all citizens should have equal access to information. (Sources from http://www.ciac.ca/en/open-culture-definition-en)
Lawrence Larry Page was born in March 26, 1973. He is an American computer scientist and internet entrepreneur who co-founded Google Inc. with Sergey Brin and is also the CEO of Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc. Page is the inventor of PageRank, Google's best-known search ranking algorithm. As of November 2014, Google has 55,600 employees and operates in more than 40 countries. Google began in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both Ph.D. students at Stanford University in Stanford, California. While conventional search engines ranked results by counting how many times the search terms appeared on the page, the two theorised about a better system that analysed the relationships between websites. They called this new technology PageRank. They determined a website's relevance by the number of pages, and the importance of those pages, that linked back to the original site. Page and Brin originally nicknamed their new search engine "BackRub", because the system checked backlinks to estimate the importance of a site. Eventually, they changed the name to Google, originating from a misspelling of the word "googol", the number one followed by one hundred zeros, which was picked to signify that the search engine was intended to provide large quantities of information. It’s really the people that make Google the kind of company it is. Google hire people who are smart and determined, and they favour ability over experience. Although Googlers share common goals and visions for the company, they hail from all walks of life and speak dozens of languages, reflecting the global audience that they serve. And when not at work, Googlers pursue interests ranging from cycling to beekeeping, from Frisbee to foxtrot. They strive to maintain the open culture often associated with start-ups, in which everyone is a hands-on contributor and feels comfortable sharing ideas and opinions. In their weekly all-hands (“TGIF”) meetings—not to mention over email or in the cafe—Googlers ask questions directly to Larry, Sergey and other execs about any number of company issues. Their offices and cafes are designed to encourage interactions between Googlers within and across teams and to spark conversation about work as well as play.
